How To Keep Your Eyes As Healthy As Possible

There are many things that you can do to help you keep your eyes healthier and to reduce your chances of developing certain kinds of eye problems or ending up with eye injuries. Here are some tips that will give you guidance when it comes to your eyes and things you should do for them:

Eat healthy foods: There are many reasons why you should follow a healthy diet, and your eye sight is just one more reason to add to that list. A well-balanced meal that contains plenty of things like omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, lutein, vitamin E and vitamin C will help you to fend off health problems, like age-related ones, for longer. A few examples of foods you should try to fit into your diet often include salmon, tuna, kale, spinach, oranges, grapefruits, beans, eggs, nuts, and pork.

Don't smoke

While most people know smoking is bad for their health in many ways, they don't realize that it can even be harmful to their eyes. If you smoke, then you are at a higher risk of developing certain problems like cataracts and even macular degeneration. Now, you can add the long-term care of your eyes to the already long list of reasons that you should not smoke.

Protect your eyes correctly from debris

When you are working in conditions where small particles and other debris will be in the air, it's important to wear proper safety eyewear. If you wear prescription glasses, don't make the mistake of thinking they will protect you. They aren't designed for this purpose and small particles and other debris can get right past your regular glasses to injure your eyes.

Don't stare at print too long

Whether you are reading a book or staring at the computer screen, you want to be sure to give your eyes a break every few minutes by looking across the room and focusing on an item for about twenty seconds. Otherwise, you may end up suffering from things like dry eyes, stinging eyes, blurry vision, and headaches.

Protect your eyes from UV rays

When you are putting on your sunscreen, make sure you also put on sunglasses. It's best to wear ones that block at least 99% of both UVA and UVB rays, but even a cheap pair of sunglasses without this protection is better than going into the sun with no protection whatsoever.
