Scheduled For Lasik? How To Avoid Problems After Surgery

If you're tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses, Lasik surgery can help you get rid of them permanently. Lasik is a surgical procedure that repairs the defects in your eyes and leaves you with clear, healthy vision. Once you've had the procedure done, you'll need to take it easy for a few weeks. This will give your eyes the opportunity to heal properly. It will also give you time to adjust to your new vision. When it comes to the recovery period, you'll need to avoid things that could potentially harm your eyes. Here are four suggestions that will help your eyes heal properly.

Don't Forget the Eye Shields

Once you've had Lasik surgery, your doctor will give you protective eye shields to wear. They'll be clear, so you'll be able to see through them, but you'll need to keep them on continually for the first day. After that, you'll need to wear them to bed for several nights. The protective shields will prevent you from injuring your eyes while you sleep. You never know when you're going to accidentally poke yourself in the eye with your finger while you're asleep, or a corner of your pillow is going to scratch your eye. The protective shields will prevent those things from happening while you're eyes are healing.

Steer Clear of Makeup and Lotions

If you're used to wearing makeup every day or applying moisturizing lotion to your face, you'll need to avoid that for at least the first week after surgery. Applying makeup or lotion to your face could cause your eyes to become contaminated, which could lead to a postoperative infection. Not only that, but your makeup brushes could injure your eyes. Before you start using makeup and lotions again, be sure to get the go-ahead from your optometrist.

Say No to the Pool

If you have a pool in your yard, you'll need to avoid it for about for a couple of weeks following Lasik surgery. Not only can chlorinated water cause severe irritation to your recovering eyes, but there could be germs and bacteria present that could cause eye infections. To protect your eyes, say no to the pool until after you talk to your doctor.

Watch Yourself Around Kids and Pets

If you have small kids or pets, you need to watch them around your eyes, especially during the first few days of your recovery period. Rough play or rambunctious pets can cause serious injuries to your eyes. To protect your eyes around your little ones and your pets, talk to your doctor about wearing your protective eye shields for a couple extra days.
